最初にこのアルバムを聴いた印象としては従来のポールらしくない現代的なロックというものであった。おそらくポール・ファンとしては受け入れるのに時間がかかったのではないだろうか。このアルバムから今までライヴで演奏された曲は皆無であり、ポール・ファンの間でも評価が分かれるアルバムである。しかし松村雄策氏が「名盤」と称しているように、マニアであるほど評価が高く、セールス的には苦戦したが、80年代中期に発表された唯一のオリジナル・アルバムということで再評価されても良いのではと思っている。

このアルバムからは第一弾シングルとして「プレス」が先行リリースされた。ロンドンの地下鉄で撮影されたプロモ・フィルムは、ミュージック・ビデオの黎明期に制作されたもので、豊かなグレイ・ヘアで少しぽっちゃりしたポールが、地下鉄で乗客と触れ合う興味深いものであった。またこの時代の特長として、12インチ・シングルという形態で様々なバージョン近い、リミックス・バージョンが数多く、それこそ把握困難なくらい乱発されていたことも挙げておこう。さらに1986年はCDとLPの割合がまだ均衡していた時代であり、レコード会社の意向として早くCDに移行したかったのであろう、CDに優位性を持たせる為にLPより3曲多い収録となっていた。この次のアルバムとなると、ベスト・アルバム『All The Best』を挟み1989年の『フラワーズ・イン・ザ・ダート』まで待たねばならない。『ヤァ！ブロード・ストリート』が新曲が含まれていたとはいえ、基本が過去の曲の再演にあったことを考慮すると、1980年代中期の唯一のオリジナル・アルバム、それが『プレス・トゥ・プレイ』であった。本作は、1985年「スパイス・ライク・アス」からアルバム『プレス・トゥ・プレイ』の収録曲順に沿って、アウトテイク、別バージョン、別ミックス、その他セッション音源を集大成したものである。

ディスク1と2はアルバム収録曲に加え、当時CDのみに収録されていた3曲のボーナストラックの別バージョンを収録している。「Good Times Coming」は間奏をポールがスキャットで口ずさんでいたり、また「Talk More Talk」はリリース・バージョンではカットされた未発表のミドル・パートが残っているなど、それぞれ全く異なる印象の曲となっている。

また『プレス・トゥ・プレイ』リリース時とほぼ時を同じくして『マッカートニー・スペシャル』というビデオがリリースされている。ポールが懐かしいアビーロード・スタジオで自分のキャリアを語るというドキュメンタリーなのだが、このビデオが特別なのは、様々なレアなライヴ映像がふんだんに使用されている点にある。1986年プリンストラストにおける「I Saw Her Standing There」、「Press」のレコーディング風景、バックヤード・テープとして知られる1975年スタジオ裏庭での「Peggy Sue」など、まだ映像ソフトが少ない時代、これらの映像に驚かされたものだ。この中でも特にレアなのは1973年のライヴ・ステージの映像であろう。「Hi Hi Hi」を演奏する初期ウイングスのステージが美しいカラー映像で収録されている点であろう。このようなものは全編をソフト化すべきだと思うのだが、残念ながらいまだ実現していない。本作に収録の『マッカートニー・スペシャル』は、この映像作品のタイムコードが入った初登場ラフ・カット・バージョンである。

続いてこの時期に出演した単発のライヴ映像を収録している。1985年のライヴ・エイドにポールひとりで単独で出演したように、この時期ツアーとは無縁であったためバンドを持っておらず、ピアノだけで演奏できる曲を選んでいる。1986年11月24日ロイヤル・バラエティ・パフォーマンス、そして1986年12月4日の「レディ・マドンナ」はユニセフのためのメッセージと共に演奏したもの。1986年12月11日にはTHE TUBEというテレビ番組に出演し「Only Love Remains」と「Whole Lotta Shakin’」を、やはりピアノのみで演奏している。先述の通りこの時期ステージはおろか単発のライヴも行なっておらず、本作に収録されているものが、数少ないライヴ演奏の全てである。

そしてDVDの最後は「マッカートニー・スペシャル」の初登場アウトテイク映像である。ガチンコから始まり、何テイクもポールのインタビュー風景が撮影されているのがわかる。通して撮影されて、その後編集されたものではなく、何度かにわけて事前に質問事項を与えられ、用意していた回答に沿って答えているという舞台裏が透けて見える。このようなアウトテイク映像はポールには珍しく、他に類を見ないものである。

Mクローデルの最新作は、1980年代中期の名盤『プレス・トゥ・プレイ』のアウトテイク、別ミックスなどスタジオ・セッションの集大成に加え、同時期の流出映像、さらにテレビ出演におけるライヴ演奏の映像を収録した映像作品のセットとなっている。ジャケット写真はアウトフォトで、オリジナルの目を閉じて下を向いているものより、こちらの方がステキな写真に思える。また細かい点になるが、帯の背に使用されている写真もこの時のアウトフォトで、今まで見たことがない貴重なものである。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。日本語帯付。
