『マッカートニーII』は、当初ウイングスのニューアルバムとしてリリース予定だったため、ジャケット写真にあるように、メンバー全員が同じ時に同じ写真を撮影しており、またバンドによるレコーディングも行なわれている。それが本作ディスク1の前半に収録されている1980年5月から6月にかけて行なわれたセッションである。曲目を見て頂くとわかる通り、曲のストックがあまりなかったのか、新曲の他、70年代から頓挫していた「COLD CUTS」収録の曲に再度トライしているのがわかる。しかしポールの不注意による日本公演中止の余波は大きく、バンド・メンバー間に不協和音をもたらした。特にデニー・レインはポールのミスに非常に立腹しており、ツアーに出たいと言って、その後バンドを抜ける事になる。デニー・レインはウイングス結成当初からポールの側に立ち、メンバーが頻繁に変わる中で忠実な“フライデー”としてポールに仕えてきた。そのデニー・レインまでが愛想をつかしてバンドを離れることで、ポールはウイングスの継続を断念したように思える。

結局、歴史が示す通り『マッカートニーII』はポールのソロ・アルバムとしてリリースされることになる。元来の選曲がどのようなものだったのかは明らかになっていないが、このアルバムを聴くと、ちょうど1970年にリリースした『マッカートニー』のように、全ての楽器をポール一人が担当し、まさにポールの宅録を聴いているような曲調が多い。当初はバンドで演奏されるはずだった楽曲群が、ほぼポールの宅録の延長のままリリースされたのではないだろうか。『マッカートニー』が未完成なままの印象を受けたのに対し、この『マッカートニーII』は機材の進歩と共に、機材に頼ったテクノ的な印象を受ける。これは当時の流行でもあったもので、現在の耳で聴くといささか古さを感じさせるが、それでも楽曲の美しさはポールならではのもので、今後再評価されてしかるべきではないだろうか。

ディスク1の前半は、ウイングスとしての最後期のセッションが収録されている。まず注目は、なんといっても今回初登場となる未発表曲「Cruising Ahead」である。冒頭に「OK Here we go」というスタジオでのポールの声が入っていることから、明らかにスタジオでのセッション音源という感じである。コーラスがわずかに入っているのはデニーだろうか。オールディーズ風のギターが合いの手のように入り、印象としてはカバーアルバム「Back In The USSR」のアウトテイクと言っても通用するかのような80年代後半の雰囲気の曲である。このようなウイングスのアウトテイク、しかも今まで知られていなかった未発表曲が流出したことに驚きを禁じ得ない。

そして続く「Weep For Love」はデニーのソロ・アルバム『Japanese Tears』のラストを飾る曲であるが、バックはウイングスが務めている。ここに収録されているのは初登場となる同曲の初期バージョンである。デニーのソロ・アルバムはベースボールに例えて「上手いマイナーリーグの選手のプレー」と評された程度で、あまり評価の高いものではないが、そこかしこにウイングスのテイストが感じられて、ポール・ファンは楽しめるものであった。この曲も、曲調はモロ、ウイングスのそれであって、他の何物でもない。

この後は何度もトライしては頓挫している『COLD CUTS』に収録予定の「Rubber’s Ball」と「New Orleans」の2曲のセッション音源が収録されている。「Rubber’s Ball」のトラック4と5は本作が初登場となる別ミックスである。Original Rough Trackはメンバーのつぶやきから始まりヴォーカルが全面に出たミックスとなっている。あえて気取った声色で歌うポールが面白い。他のメンバーの声にも何らかのエフェクトがかけられているようだ。ヴォーカル部分以外でもウ～という合いの手や笑い声を入れており、楽しそうなスタジオの雰囲気が伝わってくる。

また「New Orleans」はこのセッションから3バージョンを収録している。その内、トラック8が今回初登場となる音源である。1975年にレコーディングされたものにオーバーダブを加えたものである。メイン・ヴォーカルはリンダで、元々は『Venus And Mars』のセッションでレコーディングされた曲である。ポールとデニーの他、ドラムを叩いているのはジョーイングリッシュである。それを元にこのセッションでオーバーダブが行なわれたのである。

ディスク1の後半からディスク2が、1979年6月に行われた、後に『マッカートニーII』としてリリースされる楽曲のセッション音源を収録している。ラフ・ミックスと別テイクが多い。楽器編成がシンプルなので、一聴して違いが分かりづらいかもしれないが、明らかに別テイクだったりするので侮れない。冒頭を飾る「Coming Up」から既に別テイク。ポールのヴォーカルが全く異なり、曲途中のブレイク部分もまだ決まっていないらしく、延々続くリフに乗せてアドリブを重ねている様子が伺える。特に後半からエンディングに向けての部分は終わり方を決めていなくて、ポールがアドリブで歌い、最初の歌詞をまた繰り返したりしているのが非常に面白い。以上のようにヴォーカルは全く別なものであるが、部分的に聞き覚えのあるフレーズも出てくるので、このテイクを含め、おそらく複数テイクをレコーディングし、出来のよい部分を繋げてリリース・バージョンを作ったのではないだろうか。

「Summer’s Day Song」はリリース・バージョンでは歌が乗っていたが、ここに収録されているのはインスト・バージョンである。美しく瑞々しい曲で、まるでビートルズの「ビコーズ」を彷彿させるナンバーである。続く「Frozen Japanese」はタイトルが物議を醸した曲であるが、残念ながら元々インスト・ナンバーであるが、ここで一つの仮説が生まれる。元々「Summer’s Day Song」と「Frozen Japanese」の2曲はオケが先に完成し、後から歌詞をつけたのではないかということだ。「Frozen Japanese」はポール曰く「日本の美しい冬景色の絵葉書に着想して作った曲」であり、「本当に日本人を侮辱しようと思ったら辛辣な歌詞を加えることだって出来たはずだ。そういう意図は全くない」と釈明している。そしてポールが言う「日本の美しい冬景色」は、タイトルに反して「Summer’s Day Song」こそ相応しい曲調なのである。むしろ「Frozen Japanese」は東洋的な雰囲気を持っているが、軽快なテンポで、まるでイメージが逆なのである。

おそらくこの2曲はセットで作曲し、タイトルは後付けしたものだろう。そして「Frozen Japanese」が日本以外では「Frozen Jap」となっているのは、明らかにそれが侮蔑後だと認識していた事実を示唆している。もちろん若い年齢の時で、大麻くらいで何だよという気持ちがあったのは正直なところだろう。しかしあからさまに揶揄することは憚られる。よってタイトルで少しばかりの「復讐」をし、その言い訳として「日本の美しい冬景色に着想を得た」と「Summer’s Day Song」のインスパイアを流用したのではないだろうか。「Summer’s Day Song」と「Frozen Japanese」がセットで作られた、さらに上記のような仮定に真実性を持たせる、それがこのインスト・バージョンなのである。でなければ、他の曲がきちんと歌入りなのに、この曲のアウトテイクだけインストなのが説明つかない。

ディスク2の後半は『マッカートニーII』のリリースから漏れた、同時期の未発表曲を収録している。どれもアルバムに収録されていても違和感のないテクノ調の曲であるが、特にリンダがヴォーカルをとる「Mr H. Atom」は耳目を引く。家庭、家族、愛、の三つをテーマに掲げた1970年の『マッカートニー』はリンダとの共作とも言えるものであったし、何よりファースト・シングル「アナザーデイ」はリンダとの共同クレジットで発表された。同様に『マッカートニーII』にリンダのヴォーカル曲を入れることも検討していたのではないか。ちょうどジョンのアルバムにヨーコの曲が入っていたように。最終的にはお蔵入りとなった曲であるが、このようにリンダの曲がアウトテイクとして残されているのも興味深いもので、マニアとしては想像を掻き立てられる。

Mクローデルの最新作は、アルバム『マッカートニーII』のセッションをメインとした、ウイングス最後期のレコーディング・セッションを収録。初登場音源あり、何より素晴らしい初登場の未発表曲ありと、充実の内容で、Studio Rarities Vol.1と共に揃えて頂きたい内容である。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。日本語帯付。
