実のところ、オフィシャルというのは、良くも悪くも万人向けにトリートメントや丁寧なミックスを経ますし、その結果のサウンドはエンジニアの腕/センスにも左右されるもの。ぶっちゃけた話、「オフィシャル級」もピンキリなのです。しかし、本作はまさにサウンドボード卓から直結の録りっぱなし。現場のPAに直接流し込まれていたサウンドそのままの生々しさたっぷりなのです。バンドによっては、それも良し悪しなのですが、ことNIRVANA、それも時代を力づくで動かしていたインディーズ時代は、生サウンドこそが真実。実際、本作のドヘヴィなサウンドはメジャーはおろか、いかなるサウンド・プロデューサーの歓声さえも凌駕した時代の最先端であり、革命児しか生み出せない凄味が塊となってスピーカーから飛び出してくる。正直な話、卓直結すぎて観客の熱狂はほとんど録音されていないのですが、恐らくは現場の観客(50人から100人程度だったそう)も、茫然と立ちすくむだけだったでしょう。録音から27年経った現代の耳にも、こんなにヘヴィでリアルで混沌としたサウンドはあり得ない次元です。
そんなサウンドで繰り広げられるショウは……いや、「ショウ」等という言葉を使って良いのかさえ迷うほどに圧倒的。たった3人、ギター、ベース、ドラム、ヴォーカルの4つの音しかないハズなのに、確かに4つしか聞こえないのに、それが信じられないほどの存在感。これはもう「ショウ」ではなく「音楽現象」と呼ぶべきものです。極端に歪みまくったサウンドが耳に直接プラグ・インされ、放電しながら脳ミソをグチャグチャにかき回す。最初は『BLEACH』から7曲演奏されていることから「BLEACHのライヴバージョン」などと書こうかとも考えましたが、そんなことをしようものなら、本作を汚すことになる。そう、この「本生演奏+卓直結サウンド」は、歴史的なデビュー作『BLEACH』さえも霞む激烈ロック。そのサウンドで「Even In His Youth」や「Stain」、さらには未発表の「Token Eastern Song」「Spank Thru」まで披露(本作には、さらに同時期のスタジオ・デモ「Even In His Youth」「Polly」「Token Eastern Song」もボーナス収録しています)されていく……。当日のカート・コバーンは、「もう曲がねぇよ」と言ってアンコールを断ったそうですが、初めての異国のオーディエンスを前に、総てを出し切って去っていくNIRVANA。これを「現象」以外にどう呼べばいいのでしょう。
