オフィシャルのライブ・アルバム「HOW THE WEST WAS WON」（「REDONE」ではないですよ…笑）にも記されていたように、このツアーは若きロバート・プラントがあの唯一無比のスクリーム・ボイスで歌い上げた最後のツアーです。72年ツアーは最初に行われたオーストラリア辺りから、プラントの声の衰えがちらつき始めますが、ここアメリカにおいてプラントは復活、スクリーム・ボイス最後の輝きを放つのです。ツアー自体もここナッソー・コロシアムからエンジン全開、ZEPが一丸となった名演を量産してみせます。
ニューヨーク近郊ながら70年や71年のようなマディソン・スクエア・ガーデンと違い、この年は初のナッソー・コロシアムを使用してのライブ。それが過去やり慣れたMSGとは違った新鮮さを感じさせたのでしょうか、二日間を通してZEPは絶好調、さらにはプラントの声も最高の状態を保っていました。72年ナッソー・コロシアムのオーディエンス録音は二日間共にディスタンスな音像が特徴でありながら、それでも演奏のディティールはしっかり聞き取れるという不思議な録音状態が魅力と言えるでしょう。

ZEPが68年末から攻略し続けたアメリカですが、71年と72年ではバンドが演奏していた曲に対する立ち位置が大きく変わっています。つまり、アルバム「Ⅳ」が発売され、前年の渡米時には発売前の新曲として演奏されていた「Black Dog」や「Stairway To Heaven」が大ヒット曲へと変貌を遂げていました。この録音でもそれを証明するかのように、前者をプラントと一緒に歌ってみせる観客（しかもライブ用の「sweet jerry roll」パターンで）がいたり、あるいは後者の曲名をプラントが告げた時の大歓声がこの大きな変化を証明しています。ただし「Stairway To～」のイントロが始まった時、よりによって「チケット見せてよ、どの席？」という声が入ってしまうのが惜しまれますが。
しかし演奏自体は当時が大ヒット、大人気の真っ最中ということもあり、まだまだ形にはまらない伸びやかな演奏が感動的ですらあります。特にペイジのギター・フレーズが伸びやかで、定型パターンが決まり切っていないからこその自由な演奏、それで観客が大いに盛り上がるという理想的な臨場感も味わってみてください。そして何よりも、プラントの声が出ていますので、73年以降とは違った、本来のドラマチックなエンディングが聴かれるというのも魅力でしょう。

先に触れたように、この録音は独特のディスタントな音像が特徴なのですが、面白いことに静かで繊細な演奏が続くアコースティック・ソングのコーナーから音像やよりオンな状態へと近づきます。元々プラントが歌い込められるパートとして、彼がいつも楽しんでいたコーナーではありますが、それに輪をかけて声が若い点がさらに聴きごたえるあるものへとしてくれます。スタジオ版以上に憂いを漂わせた「Tangerine」、ノリに乗ったプラントが間奏前から「Stryder!」と叫ぶのも珍しいもの。
実を言いますと、今回のリリースの聴きどころは「Dazed And Confused」に集約されているのもポイントです。デビュー時から70年まではサイケな雰囲気を残しながら長い展開を聴かせ、71年には大阪公演の時のような、どこへ向かうのか判らないような自由でスリリングな展開を見せています。ところがこのツアーから「Dazed And～」はプラント以外の三人によるインプロヴィゼーションの駆け引きが中心となる、大きな変化を遂げます。それが「Walter’s Walk」や「The Crunge」のパターンを組み込んだ、72年ならではの展開です。しかもこの日は後者へ移る際、いつもと違った間の持たせ方が何ともスリリングであり、72年までの足腰の軽さと、この時期からのグルーブ指向な展開が合わさった素晴らしい演奏となっています。

「Moby Dick」が始まりと終わり以外がほとんどカットされてしまっているのですが、当店が以前リリースしたシアトルでもそれが始まった途端に「I hate drum solo!」という観客の呟きが聴かれたものでしたが、ここでのテーパーも同様の理由から録音を止めてしまったものだと思われます。しかしドラム・ソロのカットということがあまりマイナス・ポイントに映らないのは事実でしょう。むしろ「Whole Lotta Love」の終盤で録音が途切れてしまったことの方が惜しまれます。しかしここでも「Money Honey」を始めとしたオールディーズてんこ盛りな展開が楽しめるでしょう。
そして72年アメリカの名演の一つとして昔から有名なナッソー・コロシアム二日目のオーディエンス録音ですが、今回はステレオ・バランスの不安定さを緩和すべく、敢えてモノラル化かし、それでいて過剰なイコライズを避けた仕上がりがマニアの間でベストだと呼ばれているファン・リマスターのバージョンを元に限定のプレスCD化。リリースに当たってはヒスノイズの微調整のみにとどめています。この後シアトル、LA、そしてロング・ビーチといった歴史的名演のスタート地点となったナッソー・コロシアムを新たなベスト・バージョンにてお楽しみください！
