先週に続き、今回も当店は70年ZEPのライブ音源をリリースいたします。それに今回もアメリカ・ツアー、しかし8月から9月にかけてではなく、今回は3月から4月にかけてのアメリカ・ツアーからの音源です。このツアーからのもっとも有名な音源と言えば、ツアー初日のバンクーバーでのライブをサウンドボード録音にて捉えた「Pb」でしょう。このメガレアLPのベスト・バージョンをリリースしたのも記憶に新しいところですが、それがライブ完全収録からほど遠い内容だったというウィーク・ポイントだけはいかんともしがたく、その点は未だにオーディエンス録音の力を借りなければいけません。
とは言っても今回リリースいたします4月9日のタンパ公演ですが、オープニングの「We’re Gonna Groove」から「Heartbraker」までのライブ前半が未収録な上、録音開始以降もいくつかの箇所にカットが散見されるというのがこれまたウィーク・ポイントなのは事実。しかし、そんな欠点を補って余りあるのは、このツアーの中でもベストだとマニアに定評の高い音質の良さ。確かにそのクリアネスは別格であり、70年ライブの中でも特にプラントのスクリームが強烈な時期のライブを、何とも見事な状態でキャッチしてくれています。それに会場の臨場感も実に見事なバランスとクリアネスで捉えられており、確かにこのツアーでは疑いなしにベストのクオリティを誇るオーディエンス録音だと断言いたします！

「ライブ不完全収録」あるいは「カットが散見される」という問題を差し置いても、やはりこの見事な録音状態がモノを言い、以前はいくつものアイテムがリリースされていました。アナログLPなら「MAKUNDJU」、CDなら「WHO’S BIRTHDAY」といった具合に、マニアであればそれらのタイトルを聴いただけでピーンと来るはず。しかしこれらは80年代末から90年代にかけてのことであり、21世紀に入ってからというもの、アップデートされたアイテムが一体存在しないという状態が続いていたのです。
何しろ不完全な音源は複数の音源を駆使してコンプリートに仕立てる手法がZEPライブCD界においてあまりにもポピュラーとなってしまい、別音源が存在せずに不完全収録かつカットがある、このような音源はいくら音質が良くとも見過ごされてしまいました。むしろ当店がベスト・バージョンをリリースした前日のラレイ公演の方が今ではよっぽどポピュラーな存在かもしれません。

それに70年最初のアメリカ・ツアーは「Pb」音源も含め、ややマニア好みな時期であるということも要員でしょう。そんな印象が強いからこそ、あるいはここ最近のリマスター世代にこそ聴いていただきたい、隠れた名音源なのです。先にも触れたクリアネスだけでなく、音像の近さもこの録音の大きな魅力であり、これまで70年タンパ公演を聴かれたことがない方であれば「こんな良質な音源が埋もれていたとは…」と間違いなく驚かれることでしょう。

そして先のような録音上の問題を抱えながらも、プラント唯一無比のスクリームを始めとしたZEPの演奏の強烈な素晴らしさはこのツアーならでは。当たり前のように強烈なスクリームを決める70年のプラントでも、この年上半期のワイルドで奔放な歌いっぷりは本当に格別。まだリリースどころか録音すら行われていなかった「Since I’ve Been Loving You」ではペイジのギターとプラントの歌が完全にがっぷり四つとなった強烈さ、これは70年ならではのもの。「Thank You」でジミーのバック・コーラス（ジョンジーより危うく歌われる感じがジミーではないかと…笑）が被さるという光景もまたこの時期でしか聴かれない場面です。
そして「How Many More Times」と「Whole Lotta Love」がライブ・レパートリーとして同居する最後の時期でもあります。この頃はまだオールディーズ・メドレーが前者の方で繰り広げられています。後者のメドレーの常連となる「Mess Of Blues」がアップテンポに演奏されるのが「How Many～」バージョンならではで、そこからプラントが「My Babe」に雪崩れ込むのはレアでしょう。極めつけはペイジが弾き出すラヴェル「Borelo」のフレーズ。
このように、不完全収録であっても70年春のアメリカ・ツアーの魅力が凝縮された演奏内容と音質の素晴らしさは掛け値なしに絶品。しかし過去リリースされたアイテムはテープのジェネレーション、イコライズ、そしてピッチなど、何かしら問題を抱えていた状態のままで収録されていたこともあり、それらの問題をすべて解消した今回こそ、音源本来の魅力を出し切った、マスターからの決定版が限定のプレスCDにてリリースされます。これは名演！
