なんだか、オフィシャル盤の紹介のようになってしまいましたが、もちろん違います。超名盤「DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH」にともなう「METAL CONQUEROR TOUR 1984」のサウンドボード決定盤は、ロング・ビーチ公演だけではありません。ロング・ビーチと“両雄”と並び称された「５月２日アルバカーキ公演」もまた、2015年に最新リマスターで蘇りました！

本作は、シンプルに「JAWBREAKER」と題されたサウンドボード・ライヴのリマスター盤。そのサウンドは完璧で、“今さらリマスターなど不要では？”とも言われるほど。しかし、オフィシャルがロング・ビーチ公演に見事なリマスターを施し、一歩抜きん出てしまった以上、負けてはいられません。よりクリアに、より迫力を引き出し、さりとて元音源の自然さを失わない全力マスタリングに挑戦。見事、再び“両雄”の地位に返り咲かせることができました。
とはいえ、「オフィシャルのロング・ビーチにそっくり」なわけでもありません（それなら、オフィシャルを持っていれば良いだけの話です）。ロング・ビーチ公演は、オフィシャルらしいオーディエンス・ノイズのオーバー・ダブで風格を醸しています。一方のアルバカーキ公演にも歓声はありますが、より比重が小さく、楽音こそが主役を張る“耳元直球のダイレクト感”こそが魅力。本作は、その魅力を最大限に引き出し、演奏・歌唱の機微にスポットライトを当てた仕上がりなのです。
そうして蘇った本作「DEFINITIVE JAWBREAKER」、本当に本当に素晴らしい！　アルバムの完全再現というわけではありませんが、超名盤「DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH」から「Eat Me Alive」以外の全曲が披露され、その隙間に過去の名曲を挟み込んだショウ構成。長い歴史でも、これほど大量に新曲を披露したツアーは他にありません。「Love Bites」で重厚に始まったショウは、「Jawbreaker」で熱くさせたところで「Grinder」「Metal Gods」「Breaking The Law」の「BRITISH STEEL」３連発。その後に過去ナンバーを２曲挟み、今度は「DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH」から一気呵成の４連発!!　特にヘヴィメタルの理想像を体現した難曲「The Sentinel」をオリジナル・キーで歌いきるロブ・ハルフォードのヒロイック・ヴォイス……まさに“神の風格”です。
ディスク２は、JUDAS PRIESTの代名詞「Hellion / Electric Eye」で始まり、再び新曲の「Heavy Duty/Defenders Of The Faith」「Freewheel Burning」へ。大量に披露される新曲の中でも、ラストを務める「Freewheel Burning」は、まさに神テイク中の神テイク。初めてこの曲を聴いたときの衝撃が、ありありと蘇ってくるパフォーマンスです。余談になりますが、「ヘヴィメタルは激しいハードロック」としか思っていなかったあの頃、1983年暮れから1984年の年明けにかけてオジーの「Bark At The Moon」とJUDAS PRIESTの「Freewheel Burning」の２連発にブン殴られた事が忘れられません。ゆったりとした歌メロを切り刻むギターワークや「バカだもん」のコーラスが衝撃だった「Bark At The Moon」、超速テンポと早口ヴォーカルに、甘くヒロイックに泣くツインソロが融合した「Freewheel Burning」。この２曲に「ヘヴィメタルはハードロックじゃない！」と大きなショックを受けた方も多いのではないのでしょうか。
閑話休題、JUDAS PRIESTに集中しましょう。「DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH」の新曲ラッシュの後は、「Victim Of Changes」から「You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’」まで、何百回聴いたか分からないほどの大代表曲ラッシュです。新曲・旧曲のメリハリを極端に付けながら、１曲たりともダレず、盛り上がりに盛り上がりまくるショウ運びは、まったく奇跡のよう。全盛期のメタルゴッドだからこそ、超名盤「DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH」だからこそ可能だった唯一無二のライヴです。長いキャリアで常に最高のショウを見せてくれたJUDAS PRIESTですが、これこそが歴史上No.1のメタル・ツアーに間違いない!!!

繰り返しますが、「DEFENDERS OF THE FAIT 30th Anniversary Edition」のロング・ビーチ公演は、本当に素晴らしいです。しかし、凄いライヴであればこそ、１回聴いたら「もっと！」と思ってしまうもの。ぜひ、“両雄”の片割れでもある本作もコレクションに加えてください。メタルの聖典を数多く記してきたJUDAS PRIESTですが、本作以上にヘヴィメタルな書はあり得ません。文部科学省が検定しようと文句の付け所がない、理想を体現し尽くした「ヘヴィメタルの教科書」。プレス２CDで堂々の完成です！
