このストックホルム公演は当時からラジオ放送され、数々の既発タイトルを生んできた大定番。前代未聞の新作アルバム完全再現の話題もあり、幾多のブートレッグが登場。海外レーベルから出されたプレスCDもありました。そんな中で、ナンバー１クオリティだったのがPOWER GATEレーベルの『DEFINITIVE STOCKHOLM』。他社タイトルよりも一歩遅れて登場したのですが、あの名録音家にして世界的コレクター“Crazy S.氏”が独自ルートで入手したマスターを使用しただけに、そのクオリティは抜きんでていた。スティーヴ・ハリスのベースは豊かに鳴り、バンドアンサンブルも重厚かつ自然な迫力のサウンド。幾多の既発を一蹴するハイ・クオリティ盤だったのです。そしてサウンドだけでなく、編集も愛情たっぷり。この放送最大の欠点と言われたスウェーデン語のDJを丁寧に取り除き、ディスク２枚も“アルバム再現パート”と“ヒット曲パート”に分けていた。放送そのままをざっくりと収録していた既発群とは違い、DJやディスク交換の必要もなく“A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH再現ライヴ”がシームレスに聴けるアルバムだったのです。
そんな『DEFINITIVE STOCKHOLM』から10年。この録音の意味は大きく変わりました。当時は「話題の再現ツアーをサウンドボードで聴ける」程度だったのですが、その後、ライン録音もプロショットも一切出てくることなく、当然リリースされると思われたオフィシャルのライヴアルバムもナシ。IRON MAIDEN自身も翌2007年には（アルバム再現ではない）通常スタイルのライヴ形式に戻り、現在に至るまでいかなるアルバムも再現してはいません。つまり、このストックホルム公演こそ、IRON MAIDEN史上唯一の「アルバム完全再現サウンドボード」なのです。

本作は、そんな決定的音源を“Crazy S.氏”提供マスターから再CD化したものです。もちろん、現代の最新リマスタリングを施しているわけですが、今回の目標はズバリ「オフィシャル・サウンド」。元々から極上の放送音源だったわけですが、そのサウンド・ニュアンスは“放送らしさ”が漂うものでした。それは決して欠点ではないものの、今回は“もし公式リリースされていたらこうなっていたハズ”という夢の再現に挑戦。楽音の分離は一層美しく際立ち、輪郭もグッと迫る。迫力のサウンドに仕上げました。単に現代風にするのではなく、IRON MAIDENをこよなく愛するエンジニアが公式ライヴ作を分析し、「MAIDENオフィシャルの世界観」にまでこだわったのです。
そこまで「オフィシャル・サウンド」にこだわったのにも理由があります。ブルース・ディッキンソンを呼び戻してからのIRON MAIDENは、アルバムツアーのライヴアルバムをほぼ必ずリリースしてきました。『BRAVE NEW WORLD』には『ROCK IN RIO』があり、『DANCE OF DEATH』には『DEATH ON THE ROAD』があり、『THE FINAL FRONTIER』には『EN VIVO!』があった。現在進行中の“THE BOOK OF SOULS TOUR”も、恐らく何らかのオフィシャル作品が登場することでしょう。しかし、『A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH』にだけは何もない。しかも、前述した公式ライヴ作にも『A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH』のレパートリーは１曲も収録されていないのです。全キャリアを肯定するハリスのことですから「たまたまそうなった」と言うでしょうが、オフィシャルがたった１つだけの“穴”を放置すると言うのであれば、誰かが形にしなくては。ベストの状態で永久に残さなくては。本作は、“プレスCD化されなくてはならない”ライヴアルバムなのです。
そんな精緻な作業の元に生まれ変わった“A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH再現ライヴ”は、異様なほどに素晴らしい。MAIDEN史上でも屈指のシリアスで重厚なアルバムですが、それが本番ステージならではの躍動感まで身にまとう。スタジオ作ではややダークすぎるきらいもありましたが、客を前にしたハイテンションの爆発力で恐ろしいほどドラマティック。そして、ダークなムードを積み重ねるからこそ醸される凄まじいまでの重厚さ。なぜ、ハリスが『A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH』だけ全曲演奏したのか、なぜ、このアルバムだけが特別なのか。その意味が音楽に姿を変えて迫るライヴなのです。しかも、収録タイミングも絶妙。アルバム再現コンサートは、全43公演ありましたが、この日は真ん中の23公演目。当時、ハリスは「いつもは５・６回で調子がつかめるけど、今回は慣れるまで時間がかかった」と語っており、実際ツアー序盤には挑戦に緊張したパフォーマンスの日もありました。しかし、本作では長大なスケールも完全に身体に馴染み、それでいてツアーの疲れもない。その上で、放送収録の緊張感でピリッと引き締まったアンサンブル。サウンド面だけでなく、パフォーマンス面でもベストの名演なのです。

“A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH再現”の話だけで長くなってしまいましたが、それはディスク１。ディスク２には、代表曲で大騒ぎになるショウ終盤もオフィシャル級サウンドで完全収録しています。ここも聴きどころでして、奇数アルバム（1st・3rd・5th・7th・9th）から几帳面に１曲ずつのセレクションでMAIDEN史をさり気なく総括。いつになく隅々にまでハリスらしいこだわりがつまったライヴなのです。
そんな本作の最後には、オフィシャルのレアトラックを５曲ボーナス収録しました。いずれも既に廃盤になって久しいテイクですが、特に貴重なのは、「The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg」の別バージョンと「Run to the Hills」のスタジオ・セッション。前者はプロモCDのみ、後者は10インチ・アナログのみのお宝テイクです。この他、シングルで４曲分のライヴトラックも発表されていますが、本作ではスタジオ録音だけを完全網羅しました（本編ストックホルムの完璧なライヴトラックの前には、いかな公式テイクでも蛇足にしかなりませんから）。
IRON MAIDENの歴史上、ただ１本だけの“アルバム再現サウンドボード”。10年待っても超えるもののなかった傑作録音を、オフィシャル・レベルに引き上げたライヴアルバムです。「髪を切ったら契約してやる」を蹴っ飛ばした頑固者、スティーヴ・ハリス。「俺はYESの『海洋地形学の物語』やJETHRO TULLの『ジェラルドの汚れなき世界』、初期GENESISも観てきたけど、現代は完璧な大作コンサートは異常な時代だよね。でも、俺には正しいと思える。正しいと思えるなら、やるだけさ」と語っていたハリス。そんな彼の意地とこだわりと渾身のパフォーマンスが結晶になったステレオサウンドボード・アルバムです。本来ならオフィシャルが出すべき、永久に残すべき１本。ここに堂々の完成です!!
