もうすぐスラッシュ／ダフ・マッケイガンが復帰したGUNS N’ ROSESが日本に戻って来ようとしていますが、本作に収められているのは二度目の来日公演。「1992年２月22日：東京ドーム公演」を収めたオフィシャル映像です。このライヴは当時、衛星放送局によって放送され、その後ソフト化。２本のビデオ『USE YOUR ILLUSION I』『USE YOUR ILLUSION II』としてリリースされました。アクセル・ローズ／スラッシュ／ダフのフロントラインが揃った唯一の公式ライヴ映像として、ロック史に燦然と輝く大傑作なのです。
それだけの決定映像だけに海外プレスのDVDも存在しますが、本作はそれとは違う“日本盤レーザーディスク”から起こされたもの。現在に至るまで日本盤の再発は実現しておらず、今後もあり得ないであろう（権利の問題とも言われていますが……）特別編集版なのです。ビデオ／海外DVDは２本に分かれていますが、“日本盤レーザーディスク”は１枚もの。数曲をカットしつつ、曲順も編集された濃縮２時間バージョンなのです。
そんな“日本盤レーザーディスク”の凄味は、そのクオリティ。当店では、これまでも数々の“日本盤レーザーディスク”をデジタル化してきましたが、本作はその最新弾。コアマニアが所有していたミント・クオリティのレーザーディスクを使用し、海外のアナログ映像専門メーカーに委託。プロユースのハイエンド機材で精緻にDVD化しているのです。その画面クオリティたるや、驚異的な映像美。そもそもレーザーディスクはVHS／ベータよりも走査線も多く、規格自体が優れているわけですが、さらに保存性もけた違い。テープ特有の歪みや劣化が一切なく、艶やかな発色は当時そのまま。現在では、公式保存のマスターテープが経年劣化しているケースも珍しくなく、「遂にDVD化されたと思ったらレーザーディスクの方が綺麗だった」ということもあるくらいです。特に当時から最新メディアに敏感だった日本では無数のレーザーディスクが制作されており、その盤質も世界一。コレクター間では「究極クオリティを目指すなら日本盤レーザーディスク」とさえ言われるほどブランド化されているのです。
そんな精緻な工程を経てデジタル化された本作は、GUNS N’ ROSESの“怪物ぶり”がたっぷり。当時はイジー・ストラドリンからギルビー・クラークに交代後。そのメンバー６人に加え、ホーン３人、女声コーラス２人、サイドキーボード１人まで起用し、総勢12名によるビッグなショウなのです。バンドが大きければ、観客側のスケールもデカい。“USE YOUR ILLUSION TOUR”では二度来日して６公演を行っていますが、そのすべてが東京ドーム。ここで、ちょっとその日程を確認してみましょう。
