年明け最初に相応しい、実に貴重かつ楽しい企画盤の登場です。ザ・フーのオフィシャル盤には同タイトルの作品がありますが、本盤はエリック・クラプトンの秘蔵セッション音源を集めたもので、ザ・フー版のようなスタジオ・アウトテイク集ではなく、他アーティストとのライブ・セッション集となっています。つまりクラプトンが自身のリーダーバンドではなく、交流のあった他のアーティストのステージに飛入りしたり、イベントで共演したライブテイクが集められているのです。しかも収録されている時期は、クラプトンがアルコール中毒をほぼ克服し、バイタリティ溢れる姿に戻り弾き捲っていた80年代のみに集中しています。各曲の音質と言えば、すべて極上のステレオ・オーディエンスソースばかりを集めていますので、安心してご鑑賞いただけます。これまでもクラプトンのセッション集という趣向はブートレッグでもリリースされてきましたが、本盤はコアなマニアも唸らせる秘蔵中の秘蔵テイクを集めています。ヨーロッパのコアなクラプトン・トレーダーには知られていた音源もありますが、日本のファンにとっては本盤で初めて公開された驚きの音源もあります。それもそのはず、本盤を編集したのは、何を隠そう、クラプトンの本国イギリスの重鎮テーパー本人なのです。彼だけが保持していた秘蔵の音源集を惜しげもなく提供してくれたのが本盤です。順を追って説明させていただきますと、ディスク１の1.2.はこの当時クラプトンがアルバムに参加したライオネル・リッチーのロンドン公演に飛入りしたもので、クラプトンが参加したスタジオ・バージョンの1.の演奏後もステージに残り、2.をプレイしているのが貴重です。3.はクラプトンの親友の一人、エルトン・ジョンのMSG公演に飛入りした時のテイクで、Rocket Manという選曲が非常にレアです。続いては89年にロンドンで開かれた「食品の安全を考える両親の会」主催のイベントに出演した際のもので、ジョージ・ハリスンがMCを務めています。このイベントでは指揮者のマイケル・ケイメンがオーケストラを率いて出演したため、曲は彼とのコラボでレコーディングしたテレビドラマの主題曲となっています。次の5曲は83年当時、懇意にしていたイギリスのパブロック・デュオ、チャス＆デイヴを伴っての「セイヴ・ザ・チルドレン」のイベントに出演した時のものです。セッションに最適なお得意のブルース・ナンバー、ロックンロール・ナンバーで盛り上がる様子が捉えられています。クラプトンが今でも愛聴するGoodnight Ireneがプレイされているのに注目です。本盤収録テイクでは、このパートが本邦初公開となる非常に貴重な音源です。ディスク1の最後を飾るのは、再びエルトンとの共演ナンバーです。この曲は二人の共演曲としては複数テイクがあるほど有名なものですが、ここではTOTOのスティーヴ・ルカサーが参加しているのが珍しいものです。ディスク2は、クラプトンの敬愛する黒人ブルース・ギタリスト、バディ・ガイをメインとした2回分のライブ・セッションを収めています。両方ともバディがロンドンのクラブでギグを行なった際に飛入りしたもので、これでもかというほど弾き捲るバディとクラプトンのギター・バトルが楽しめます。どちらかというと、歌はギター・バトルの添え物的な意味合いになってしまっているのが面白いところで、曲目はブルースなら何でもよかったような話です。とにかく長時間に渡り弾き捲る二人のプレイでお腹いっぱいになることでしょう。実際にはここに収録された以上の曲で二人のセッションは続いたのですが、キリがないということで(笑)、ここにはベスト・プレイが選ばれて収められています。自身の音楽のみならず、他アーティストとのセッションでも見事にフレキシブルに対応するクラプトンの才能と技を知るにはもってこいの企画盤と言えるでしょう。コアなクラプトンマニアはもちろんですが、「へぇ、こんな人とやってたんだ！」という話題の一つとして一般のロックファンの方にも聴いていただきたい当店だけの上級ファン向け音源集です。永久保存のプレス盤でリリースさせていただきますので、どうぞよろしくお願い致します。
