エルトンは、彼自身の最高傑作アルバムと言われる「Goodbye Yellow Brick Road」を73年10月にリリースした後、74年のツアーを、2月1日、東京・日本武道館からスタートさせた。日本でのコンサートは71年10月以来2度目となる。この２度目の来日公演は、初日の武道館公演が体調不良などのトラブルにより、一時間余りで打ち切られるなど、波乱の幕開けとなったが、2日目からは本来の調子を取り戻し、躍動感溢れる素晴らしいライヴを披露している。この音源は、2月3日、大阪厚生年金会館で行われたライヴを良好なオーディエンス録音で収録している。この頃のエルトンは、発表するシングル・アルバムともにチャート一位を獲得するなど絶頂期と言われた時期であり、この大阪でのライヴも素晴らしい内容である。この２度目の来日時のライヴとしては、初日の音源が「Only Seventy Minute」というタイトルでリリースされているが、それに比べると、比較にならない程、音も良い。アルバム「Goodbye Yellow Brick Road」のオープニングを飾る「Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding」で始まり、「Your Song」、「Candle In The Wind」と、往年の名曲を立て続けに演奏し、聴衆を魅了している。アルバム「Honky Chateau」に収録されている「Hercules」は実に８分半にも及ぶエキサイティングな演奏で、一聴の価値がある。収録されている曲目を見ると全17曲中「Goodbye Yellow Brick Road」から9曲、「Honky Chateau」から3曲、「Don’t SHoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player」から2曲、あとは日本では来日記念盤として、11月にシングルカットされた「Step Into Chirstmas」。季節外れではあるが、日本でのニューシングルということで演奏されたのであろう。そしてこの時点では発表されておらず、エルトンが「新曲で今まで演奏したことはなく、7月に発表されるニューアルバムからです。」と紹介して歌う「Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me」。そして彼のコンサートでは必ず演奏される「Your Song」となっている。完全収録ではないが、この当時しか演奏されていない曲が聴けるとともに、絶頂期ののエルトン、それも日本でのライヴを今こうして聴くことが出来るのは嬉しい限りである。是非とも聴いて頂きたい音源である。
