これが“STORMBRINGER WORLD TOUR”の全容。これ以前には「Stormbringer」や「Gypsy」「Lady Double Dealer」といった新曲は演奏されず、この後のライヴは『COME TASTE THE BAND』以降になります。この中で本作が録音されたのは、リッチーがDEEP PURPLE脱退を決意した後の、最後のヨーロッパ・ツアー。この時、すでに『銀嶺の覇者』を制作し、“RAINBOWとDEEP PURPLE”が重なり合った12公演だったのです。その12公演をさらに詳細に見てみると……。

……と、このようになっています。当店ではスウェーデン公演を『RIDE THE RAINBOW（POWER GATE-259）』としてご紹介してきましたが、本作は、その前日にあたる。ただでさえ貴重な“STORMBRINGER WORLD TOUR”の上に、歴史の大きな転換点でもあった12公演。それだけに１公演でも多く聴きたいところですが、本作はその想いに応えるライヴアルバムなのです。
この「1975年３月20日コペンハーゲン公演」は、かねてより記録が知られていましたが、本作は最近になってネット上に登場したマスター。海外の高名なコレクターが公開し、マニアが騒然となっている音源なのです。その話題の中心は、なんと言ってもクオリティ。非常に素晴らしいヴィンテージ・オーディエンスで、41年前の匂いをたっぷりと振りまきながら、鮮やかな楽音が素晴らしい。超・美麗サウンドというわけではありませんが、その骨太な楽音はまさにロック（岩）のよう。距離感がまるでなく、ギターもヴォーカルもダイレクトに轟くさまは「まるでサウンドボード」と呼びたくなる。「Stormbringer」がカットインし、「Mistreated」の６分台にテープチェンジのための録音漏れがあるため、“完全無欠”とはいきませんが、なんとも力強いサウンドのライヴアルバムなのです。
サウンドも力強ければ、演奏も強烈。当時、23-24歳だったデヴィッド・カヴァデール＆グレン・ヒューズの若々しい勢いは猛烈ですし、「これからバンドを背負って立つ」の気迫まで滲むかのよう。そこに脱退を決意したリッチーが真っ向からぶつかり合う。1993年の再脱退時にはヤル気のなさが垣間見えることもありましたが、この時はリッチーも29歳。“脱退”の決意でマンネリ感から抜けだしつつ、「もう終わりだ」の集中力も燃え上がる。すでに新スタートを切った意欲とこなれたアンサンブルがラストスパートの全力疾走で駆け抜けるのです。
もちろん、ジョン・ロード＆イアン・ペイスも素晴らしい。もともとジャムが基礎にあるバンドだけに、火の出るような演奏は全体に広がりやすいわけですが、さらにこのツアーは旧友を送り出す特別な12公演。１公演ずつのカウントダウンは、１曲ずつの集中力となり、１フレーズの交感に命を吹き込む。やや不健全なカタチではありましたが、“名演になるべくしてなった名演”がたっぷりと詰まっているのです。

二度と蘇ることのなかった、栄光の第３期。その最後のヨーロッパツアーは、最高の輝きを放っていた。そんな刹那を本生100％ながら、極太のサウンドで描ききった名録音です。『嵐の使者』のレパートリーも演奏しつつ、あくまでもリッチーが燃え上がるライヴアルバム。この至福の新発掘、今週末あなたのお手元へお届けいたします。
