“栄光の第２期”の終焉となり、日本武道館の暴動でも記憶に残る1973年２度目の来日公演。その２日目、DEEP PURPLE初の名古屋公演のオーディエンス・アルバムがギフト・リリース決定です。
リッチー・ブラックモアやDEEP PURPLEの全キャリアをフォローしてきた当店では、この1973年ツアーも数多くのタイトルをご紹介してきました。ここでカンタンに整理してみましょう。

このように、当店では全日程のライヴアルバムをご紹介しています。その中で、本作は「1973年６月24日：名古屋市公会堂」のオーディエンス・アルバムです。上記のように、この日はプレスCD『LIVE IN NAGOYA（Darker Than Blue 148）』もリリースしておりますが、本作はそれとは別録音。古くから『THE STORY OF LOSER』等の既発タイトルで知られる名録音です。
そんな伝統録音である本作は、素晴らしいヴィンテージ・サウンド。なによりも素晴らしいのは、骨太の楽音。『THE STORY OF LOSER』はヒスノイズが厳しいサウンドでしたが、本作はサッと晴れて楽音自体がそそり立つ。その間近感は圧倒的で、初名古屋の熱狂も真空パックしながら、各楽器のディテールも鮮やかにすべてを制圧しきる。全体的には「まるでサウンドボード」と呼ぶタイプではないものの、こと楽音の近さ、骨太感はライン録音にも匹敵する。時代によってサウンドが変わるリッチー・ブラックモアですが、1973年サウンドの美しさがはっきりと伝わります。『THE STORY OF LOSER』の他にも派手なイコライジングで歪みまくったCDもありましたが、今回入手されたマスターは、ずっとナチュラル。さすがにプレス２CDの名盤『LIVE IN NAGOYA』には及ばず、高音がやや歪んではいますが、元録音の素晴らしさは十分に感じられるライヴアルバムなのです。
そのクオリティで描かれる初の名古屋公演がまた何ともヴィンテージ。初来日とはまるで違うテンションですが、終焉に向けてカウントダウン状態になったバンドは１曲１曲を噛みしめるよう。イアン・ギランは「Highway Star」で歌に詰まって一瞬ヴォーカルレスになるなど、やや苦しそうなところもあるものの、そのパワフルな歌声は再結成毎は別人のよう。一方のリッチーはなかなか好調で、「Smoke On The Water」ではイントロもソロも歌心たっぷり。「Strange Kind Of Woman」冒頭ではイアン・ペイスと絡んで小気味良いプレイを聴かせ、中盤でも流れるようなソロを披露する。ギランとの掛け合いはやや短めですが、ここではギランのシャウトも強烈です。

さらに奮闘著しいのがジョン・ロード。ライヴのハイライト「Child In Time」ではリッチー＆ペイスと絡み、中間部では気高さすら覚える音色を轟かせる。「Lazy」でも荘厳な導入から、軽快でノリのよくかっ飛ばす。リッチーも負けじと切れ味あるフレーズで応戦。そして20分に及ぶ「Space Truckin’」……やはり、この２人こそがDEEP PURPLEの核なのだと今さらながら思い知る演奏ぶりが次から次へと繰り出されます。
彼らに栄光をもたらした『MADE IN JAPAN』の地に再び戻ってきたDEEP PURPLE。終幕へのカウントダウンでありながら、それでも確実に輝いていた初の名古屋公演を記録したライヴアルバムです。ややマニアックな１本ではありますが、これもまた貴重な“Mark II in Japan”。今週末、あなたのお手元へお届けいたします。
