ただし、これまでの当店リリースに関して言えば、77年のツアー中盤から終盤に偏っていたのは事実でしょう。実際にマニアの方からも「ツアー前半のライブを出してもらえないだろうか？」という要望がありました。このツアーは一か月半の中でどんどんセットリストが進化しており、先のボストンとツアー前半を比べると、かなり構成が変化しているのです。特にツアー前半でしか聴かれないレアなレパートリー、それが「Something In The Night」でした。
この曲は「DARKNESS EDGE OF TOWN」用のレコーディングが行われるよりずっと前、それこそ76年の内からライブで披露されていた新曲だったのです。当初のバージョンはアルバム・バージョンとまったく別な曲と言って良く、静かなアレンジで毎晩演奏されています。ところが77年に入るとアレンジは豹変。いよいよ「DARKNESS EDGE～」のバージョンに近付いたアレンジが導入されたのです。ただし残念なことに、この曲が演奏されたのはツアー前半だけのことで、その事実を知らない方も多いかと思われます。
この曲のアレンジが進化した上で演奏されていた事が77年ツアーの前半における重要なポイントなのですが、しかも今回リリースとなる2月15日のデトロイト公演では、大胆にもこの新曲をオープニングで演奏してみせたのですから驚き。そこから通常のオープニング・ナンバーである「Night」へと切り替わる展開は文字通り静と動が入り混じった見事な展開となっていたのですが、残念ながらこのインパクト十分なオープニングはこの日だけのものとして終わってしまいました。
そんな貴重な日のリリースというだけでも、世界中のマニアの注目を浴びることは間違いないと思われます。しかしそれだけではありません。この日のオーディエンス録音の音質がまた非常に素晴らしい！実を申しますと、この日の音源はその名も「MASONIC TEMPLE」というタイトルで過去にリリースされたことがあったのですが、そこではダビングを何度重ねたのか解らないような音源が使われており、せっかくの貴重な内容でもピッチの狂いや音質の劣化がそれを台無しにしてしまっていたのです。
今回はそんなJEMSがこの日のマスター・カセットを発掘。音質は「MASONIC TEMPLE」がまったくお話しにならない程のアッパーぶりを見せてつけてくれます。元がモノラル録音ですので、ボストンやミルウォーキーのウルトラ・レコーディングの域にはさすがに及びません。しかし程よい距離感とウォーミーな音質はマスター収録ならではのもの。クリアネスも申し分なく、過去のアイテムをお持ちの方であれば、間違いなく腰を抜かしてしまうほど、はっきりとした音質の差を実感していただけることでしょう。
そしてレアなオープニングだけでなく、他にも「Rendezvous」のような名曲、この時点では76年から継続して演奏されていたアニマルズのカバー「It’s My Life」、そして文字通り鬼気迫る展開が壮絶な「Backstreets」といった具合で77年ツアーの魅力もしっかり凝縮されています。当店から初めての77年ツアー前半戦からのレア・レコーディング、内容も音質も最高な限定のプレスCDとしてリリースされます！
