先の「Subterranean Homesick～」の冒頭部分にその音源を使いましたが、この補填と音源本体では音像にかなりの差があり、同曲の序盤を聴いていると会場後ろの席から一気にフロント・ロウへとジャンプ・アップしたかのような、圧倒的な音質のアッパーぶりを実感していただけることでしょう。それほどライブ本体の音質は破格のクリアネスを誇るのです。他にも大きな欠点だった「Like A～」のエンディング部分からその後のアンコール前の曲間も同様の補てんを施しております。細かいところでは「All Along Watchtower」の0:28辺りにおける微妙なカットまでもアジャスト。そんな音質の良さだけでなく、この日の演奏の素晴らしさというのもまた格別なものです。長く行動と共にしていたトム・ぺティ・アンド・ザ・ハートブレーカーズの大所帯バンドから別れ、1988年のディランは自身を含めてわずか四人というシンプルな編成にて心機一転のライブ活動を始めました。このバンドで重要な役割を担ったのがギタリストのGE・スミス。ホール・アンド・オーツ・バンドのギタリストとして縁の下の力持ちを担っていた彼はH&Oの活動休止にともないバンドを抜け、セッション・ギタリストやテレビ番組「SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE」ハウス・バンドのメンバーとして活躍しますが、88年からディランのバンドのリーダーとなったことでさらなる脚光を浴びることとなりました。
彼を中心としたシンプルでストレートなバンドサウンドをバックに、文字通り生まれ変わったディランのライブ・サウンドは強烈の一言！演奏も歌もハードに押しまくる様にひたすら圧倒されること請け合いです。その凄みはやはり今回のような高音質オーディエンス録音で聴くとまた格別。クリアすぎて演奏のダイナミズムが伝わってこないサウンドボードとは一味違います。しかしそのエレクトリックな演奏で押しまくる前半から一転、ディランとGE・スミスの二人だけで繰り広げられるアコースティック・コーナーがまた素晴らしい。選曲も60年代の渋めな「Mama You Been On My Mind」といったチョイスがマニアを唸らせます。それに何と言ってもエレクトリックの時のハードな歌い方から一転したディランの繊細な歌には思わず聞き惚れてしまうことでしょう。しかもアンコールでは「Blowin’ In The Wind」という必殺の選曲。このオンな音像と臨場感を兼ね備えた文句なしの録音をレストア、88年当時の新生ディラン、ハードで熱狂的なライブのレア音源がリリース決定です！
