’70年代中盤のBLACK SABBATHを代表するライヴといえば、「SABOTAGE」リリースにに伴うアメリカツアー中の’75年8月5日、ニュージャージー州アスバリー・パークにおけるサウンドボード音源でしょう。この音源が余りにも飛び抜けた存在感を放っているため、同時期のオーディエンス録音は少々目立たないのですが、そのアスバリー・パーク公演直前の’75年8月3日、ロードアイランド州プロヴィデンスの”シビック・センター”公演を収録した本作「MEGALOMANIA」は、オーディエンス録音ながら大定番サウンドボード音源にも負けない、素晴らしいサウンドを楽しませてくれます。

　本作はこの数年間ライヴ音源コレクターを驚かせ続けている、あの”ダン・ランピンスキー”による秘蔵のライヴ・テイクで、過去には知られていなかった超ヴィンテージ音源です。本音源が日の目を見た当時は、海外マニアの間でも「この時期にこんな凄いオーディエンス録音があったなんて！」と大きな話題になったほど。本録音の音質も同時期のBLUE OYSTER CULT等の録音ソースで想像される通りの素晴らしさ。クリアさ抜群の見通しだけでなく、会場の空気感を損なわずパッケージしたワイドな音響、場内の興奮を生々しく味わえる臨場感など、全てプレスCD級のクオリティです。もちろん演奏は非常に聴き取りやすく、オジーのヴォーカルを中心にメンバー全員の演奏が理想的な分離感と均整で構成された楽音は、ヘタなライン・ソースが裸足で逃げ出すもの凄さ！　ライヴ前半ではマスター状態に起因する音のふらつきや音像の変化が多少認められるものの（ライヴが進行するにつれて音は良化し、「Symptom Of The Universe」辺りで完全に安定します）、これだけの録音が100分間に渡って残されていた事は奇跡的ですらあります。

　「Killing Yourself To Live」で始まるライヴはこの時期ならでは。「SABOTAGE」からのメタリック＆ドゥーミーな「Hole In The Sky」も同年ツアーの大きな聴き所です。オリジナルSABBATHの代名詞のといえる「Snowblind」と「War Pigs」も、このツアー辺りからギター・サウンド金属的な質感を加え、ヘヴィメタルらしいエッジで再現されるようになります。後年のスラッシュ・ハードコア勢に多大な影響を与えた「Symptom Of The Universe」では若いメンバーのエネルギーが大爆発。ノコギリの刃のように尖り立ったアイオミのギターは、触れると怪我をしそうな鋭さでリフを刻み、ビル・ワードの会場を揺るがすようなドラミング、ギーザー・バトラーの黒くうねるベースも、全て最高のパワーで聴き手をノックアウトしてくれます！　ディスク1ラストの「Megalomania」は、淡々と進む前半と、ドラマティックに展開する中盤～後半の勢いが見事。ここで実験された成果が後の「Heaven And Hell」で結実した事を伺わせます。
　ライヴ後半の聴き所「Sabbra Cadabra」メドレーが始まるディスク2は、冒頭から前半以上に素晴らしい録音が実現しており、アイオミやギーザー、ビルが阿吽の呼吸で繰り広げるジャムパート、さらに「Sometimes I’m Happy」・「Supernaut」・「Iron Man」といった楽曲も凄まじい迫力とクリアなサウンドで一部始終を聴き通せます。40分を越えるメドレーを締めくくる「Black Sabbath」の圧倒的なスケール感は、熱心なSABBATHマニアすら度肝を抜かれるに違いありません！　さらにセットの大詰めに取り上げられる「Spiral Architect」もライン音源のようなクリアさで収められています（曲中におけるジェラルド・ウッドルフのシンセも明瞭かつ強烈）！　クライマックスの「Children Of The Gave」や「Paranoid」におけるドラムやギターのリアルさも秀逸で、本録音の音質は最後の最後まで聴き手を驚かせます！
