1996年リリースのJAZZスタンダード曲をカバーした『None Too Soon』以降、リズムセクションを一新し、ライブに於いてもややアコースティカルでJAZZ寄りのスタイルを打ち出し、シンタックスに変わる新兵器Roland VG-8（ヴァーチャルギターシステム）とともに大規模な北米～ヨーロッバ縦断ツアーを決行したHoldsworth trio。数多く残された名演の中から選りすぐりの2つの代表的なSBD音源がお得なカップリング2枚組プレスCDという形式でリリースされた。どちらも超有名な最高のプロショット映像（youtubeでも観ることが出来る）が存在し、今回使用されたマスターが、FMブロードキャスト版の再編集か、マスター映像からのサウンド落としであるかは現時点では不明。最近ネットで放流されたトレード落ちの同音源の可能性もある。JAZZ FES出演時のショートギグの為、演奏時間は短いものの音質は期待と想像を遙かに超えて最上級、セットリストも興味深く、半分以上は当時の新曲で、後にアルバム『SIXTEEN Men Of Tain』に収録されたものとは、アレンジ＆曲構成ともに違うプロトタイプバージョン、もちろんI.O.U時代の曲も新編成による新解釈で完全再構築されており聞き所は多い。この時期のツアーでは中盤に「Shallow Sea」最後に「Tokyo Dream」を演奏する事が多かったのだが、残念ながら今回の音源には収録されていない。ディスクごとに解説しておくと1枚目が97年6月7日のフランクフルト公演で、全体の音質はバランス、音圧ともに抜群で、ラジオ放送用なのかcompressionの効いたローミッドの押し出しの強いパンチのある、まとまりの良い仕上り。特筆すべきはこの日のAllanの実験的なギタートーン（VG-8）の特異さだろう。空間処理を最小限におさえ、ピッキングアタックは圧縮され、サスティンも短く、コードワークにおける各弦のクリア良さは最高、EWI等のウインドシンセのようでもあり、ソロフレーズのつながりもソリッドに聴こえ、濁りの全くない硬質なサウンドは他の音源では決して聴くことのできないものだ。新編成となってから日が浅いにもかかわらず相互の意志の疎通のとれた一体感のある演奏も凄まじく、Gary Novakの若々しくシャープな疾走感と、Dave Carpenterのハイポジションをタイトに攻めるスピーディなスタイルのマッチングは今聴いても最高のコンビネーションだと思う、Holdsworthも新曲に望む意欲を充分に感じさせる手癖の少ないImprovisationが素晴らしい。もう一枚はお馴染み Warsaw Jazz Festより98年6月19日の収録。こちらの音質は余裕のヘッドルーム＆広ダイナミックレンジで、きめ細かく解像度の高い録音はもとより、各楽器の定位と分離の良さが魅力のこれまた最高峰のSBD。若干緊張気味のallanは中盤以降盛り返し、斬新な「0274」から「Texqs」あたりはベストチューン、おまけの「Proto Cosmos」も嬉しい。各メンバーも長いツアーをくぐり抜けてきただけあって、プッシュするところと引くべきところのメリハリはバッチリ、細かい決めの部分での遊びなども余裕があり、よりスケールの大きな演奏が魅力だ。Holdsworthのギターはやや甘めでスムースないつものサウンドに戻っており、VG-8と通常のギターサウンドのミックス具合はベスト、「Above and Below」などの静謐な曲での圧倒的なオーケーストレーションも空間の広がり感がアップしており、この時期にようやく完全にVG-8を使いこなせるようになった事が判る。今回のリリースでカップリングになった事により、1997、1998のベストなSBDが気軽に購入できるようになった事は嬉しい。映像版を未入手の初心者ファンにも、コアに音質を追求するマニアにもオススメできるベストパックと言えるだろう。
